In the search for meaning, perception is an interesting process in our brain. In my recent work, I try to create contexts that are not obvious and that are disruptive because they visually seek the limits of abstraction. It is like a picture on a smartphone: how many pixels are necessary to be able to understand the image? In today's media, the phenomena of split-second recognition is a must. When image and meaning are not clear immediately, we tend to get lost in our emotions and confusion. But that doubt is an interesting topic.
Touching the sky, brushing the clouds, materialising the immaterial ... the colour is rendered tangible. Every shade of the sunset has been mixed by hand. The colour transitions are grazed, the contrasts rubbed — the grain of the canvas massaged by my hands. Now dirty, they form an imprint on the surface. ‘Hasta el cielo’ (up to heaven) refers to the nebulousness and immensity of the sky, to vapour of Joseph Turner's journeys through fog.
For Scheurweghs, the beauty of photography lies not in framing reality, but rather in providing the context for the viewer to frame his or her own memories and emotions. In the artwork of Scheurweghs, the male gaze is a reciprocal subject. For this beach chair, she has flipped the gaze around. Instead of a man gazing at a woman, the man become the 'object of sexual desire' in question. And yet, at the same time, the body remains simply a body and is not necessarily sexualised.
